Have you ever witnessed your dog scooting around on the floor? It, unfortunately, might mean your dog needs their anal glands expressed (a.k.a releasing a buildup of smelly fluid). Manually expressing your dog’s anal glands can help relieve discomfort that dogs experience when they are full and can prevent any infections from developing that can result into serious healthcare issues over time. Expressing anal glands is a smelly and messy job, but part an important regular pare of care and grooming for your furry friend. We have found that most dog owners prefer to have it done by an experienced professional care provider.

Why is it Necessary?
When pooping, dogs can release small amounts of liquid from their anal glands regularly. As dogs mature, they may not be able to express their glands properly due to various factors, potentially leading to discomfort or infection. If not regularly treated, this can lead to the following issues:

Scent Marking:
Anal gland secretions, released during defecation, are a unique scent for each dog, used for communication and territorial marking.

Anal Gland Impaction/Infection:
If the anal glands are not emptied regularly, they can become impacted (blocked) or infected, causing discomfort and potentially serious complications.

Lubrication:
Anal gland secretions help to lubricate the anus during defecation, making it more comfortable for the dog.

Involuntary Expression:
Dogs may also express their anal glands involuntarily when they are scared or stressed.
